How to file a disability appeal in Arizona?

If your Social Security Disability (SSDI or SSI) claim has been denied in Arizona, you’re not alone. A large number of initial applications are denied, even when the applicant is eligible. Fortunately, the Social Security Administration (SSA) provides several levels of appeal—and many applicants are ultimately approved at a later stage.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you file a disability appeal in Arizona and improve your chances of getting approved.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

Step 1: Understand Why Your Claim Was Denied

Before you begin the appeal, carefully read the denial notice sent by the SSA. It outlines:

  • The reason your claim was denied
  • The medical and non-medical information reviewed
  • Instructions for filing an appeal and the deadline

Understanding this notice will help you target the issues when preparing your appeal.

Step 2: File a Request for Reconsideration

This is the first level of appeal. You must file it within 60 days of receiving your denial.

You can file the reconsideration:

  • Online at ssa.gov
  • By mail using Form SSA-561
  • At your local Social Security office

During reconsideration, a new reviewer will evaluate your claim. Be sure to submit new medical evidence or any updates since your original application.

Step 3: Request a Hearing Before an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ)

If your reconsideration is denied, the next step is to request a hearing before an ALJ.

  • File your hearing request within 60 days of the second denial
  • You can file online or at your local SSA office
  • You’ll receive notice of the hearing date and location

Prepare to explain your case, provide additional evidence, and, if possible, have your doctor submit a detailed statement regarding your limitations.

Step 4: Consider Higher Levels of Appeal

If the ALJ denies your claim, you can move to the next levels:

  • Appeals Council Review: Request that the SSA Appeals Council review the ALJ’s decision
  • Federal Court Review: As a final step, you can file a lawsuit in federal district court

These are more complex and often benefit from legal representation.

Tips for a Successful Appeal
  • Stay organized: Keep track of deadlines, documents, and correspondence
  • Submit updated medical evidence promptly
  • Stay in treatment: Regular medical care supports your claim
  • Communicate clearly: Be thorough when explaining how your condition affects your daily life and ability to work
